A half-finished building that was being constructed illegally in a Mumbai suburb has collapsed, killing at least 35 people – eleven of them children.

The building in the Thane neighbourhood caved in at 6.08pm yesterday, police said, leaving a pile of smashed concrete and twisted metal. Fifty people were injured, while another 20 are still missing.

Rescue workers with sledgehammers, power saws and hydraulic jacks are struggling to break through the rubble in their search for survivors. Six bulldozers have even been brought to the scene to help with the search.

‘There may be (a) possibility people have been trapped inside right now,’ the local police commissioner K.P. Raghuvanshi,’ said.

At least four floors of the building had been completed and were occupied. Workers had finished three more floors and were adding an eighth storey when it collapsed, police inspector Digamber Jangale said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the structure to collapse, but Mr Raghuvanshi said the building was weak and that officers were searching for the builders to arrest them.

A local resident, who did not give his name, said the site was only meant to hold a smaller structure and said officials turned a blind eye to the problem.
