U.S. Congressmen condemned the Armenian massacre in the Azerbaijani town of Sumgait in 1988.
Making a speech at the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Frank Pallone noted: «The Sumgait massacre is but one example in a long line of Azerbaijan’s aggression and hostility against the Armenian people. Just two yeas later, the disappearance of a 450,000 strong Armenian community in Azerbaijan was witnessed. The Azerbaijani Government was successful in ethnic cleansing and the mass deportation of the entire Armenian population of Baku».
Frank Pallone noted that the 23rd anniversary of the Sumgait massacre reminded again of the historical injustices the Armenian people had faced.
«I ask that my colleagues stand with me in recognizing this tragic moment in history. Through recognizing the atrocities of the past, we can build a more peaceful future», Mr. Pallone said.
The Congressman noted the need for strong U.S. engagement in the region to safeguard Armenia against the aggressive tactics of its neighbors.
In her turn, Congresswoman, Republican Party Member Anna Eshoo stated that everybody must remember those tragic days and pay tribute to the memory of the Armenian pogrom victims.
«It is also a very personal remembrance for me. My own family members fled the slaughter of the Armenian Genocide under the Ottomans, and when we learned of the massacres against Armenians in 1988, we saw history repeating itself. These vicious acts of murder, targeted at ethnic groups, must be forcefully condemned whenever and wherever we see them. Yet 96 years after the slaughter, Congress has yet to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide», Anna Eshoo emphasized.
She called upon the Congressmen to take specific steps for struggling against ethnic violence, discrimination and extremism.
