UN Family in Armenia respects memory of the victims of Haiti earthquake

Yesterday UN Armenia Office staff gathered for a solemn ceremony, with a minute of silence, respecting the memory of the victims of the devastating earthquake which took place the same day of the year 2010 in Haiti.

On 12 January, 2010 Haiti suffered a disaster of unparalleled magnitude.  The earthquake of that day killed over two hundred thousand people; more than three hundred thousand were injured and a staggering 2.3 million – nearly one quarter of the population – was displaced.

One hundred and two United Nations colleagues perished and many more suffered terrible personal losses.

UN Secretary-General issued a statement on the occasion of the anniversary of earthquake in Haiti expressing his solidarity with the people of Haiti and all those who suffered tragic losses a year ago and issue: “We honor those who left us and carry on their work. We also honor the resilience and determination that the people of Haiti have shown at this difficult time.”
