Public struggle for the Garden of Dragons continues for more than a month
SOCIETY, Daily news | ankakh | December 20, 2010 18:11The public hearings on site development at Harden of Dragons appointed by Nature Protection Minister of Armenia can be considered cancelled. On 18 December, at 10:30, the residents of adjacent houses, representatives of Nature Protection Ministry and NGOs, political parties (“Heritage” and the Unions Party) came for the discussions. However, neither “KR CONSTRUCTION” company nor Nor Nork quarter administration that launched site development in the garden appeared for the public discussions.
Reminder: Nature Protection Minister Aram Harutyunyan stopped this illegal construction of a block of flats upon resident and public demand in the Garden of Dragons and said, “We will hold public hearings with people living here, listen to them and you will them what you want to construct and what kind of documents you have. If you have received the positive opinion of the environmental expert assessment, the construction will continue.”
Public struggle for the Garden of Dragons continues for more than a month. “This dragon stone is more than 4000 years old. The company captured it, but we will liberate them,” said one of the residents to EcoLur. Another resident said, “While trees were cut and burnt down.” In reality, one can see stumps of trees and burnt down roots among young trees planted recently during the garden improvement action (see the Photo Report).
According to Architect Marine Parazyan, this public territory was put for tender in 2002 according to Yerevan Mayor’s decision and was transferred to a Zadoyan. Tehn this territory was resold and eventually the new owner decided to construct a block of flats without any legal bases. “There were no legal bases even in the decision to sell the territory,” think residents and NGOs. “The representatives of the State Environmental Expert Assessment Center attended these public hearings and must fix it that we are against,” this is the opinion of those who gathered and put their signatures against the site development, more than 200. Residents and activists intend to apply to Yerevan Mayor Karen Karapetyan, as well as the Government of Armenia with an appeal to call back this illegal decision.
