Russia Becoming a WTO Member is a Realistic Perspective
Worldwide, Daily news | ankakh | December 8, 2010 16:37Russia’s president D.Medvedev moved a step closer to membership in the World Trade Organization today by signing an agreement with the European Commission President Jose Barroso. Russian accession to the WTO has “practically become reality,” President Dmitry Medvedev told journalists in Brussels. President Medvedev thinks that Russia’s WTO membership is realistic. Russia has been negotiating with WTO for 17 years, and is the only country having progressive economy that is not a member of WTO. To get WTO membership Russia needs the agreement of 153 WTO member countries. According to experts, Russia has to agree to cut the timber export duty, import duties, pricing policies for railway, to reconsider the regulations of aerostatics, as well as provide access to machinery market.
As the experts state, among the unsettled issues are the sanitary criteria of meat import in Moscow ,as well as maintenance of intellectual property rights. As Euronews informs, Medvedev tried to annul EU member countries border crossing procedures, but he managed to only simplify the procedures.
