The Response of ‘’Illustrated Geographical Encyclopedia’’(in Russian) to the Editorial Staff of ‘’Ankakh’’

Dear gentlemen!

We got acquainted and analyzed your remarks concerning the ‘’Illustrated Geographical Encyclopedia’’ published by our publishing house. This edition comprises the data presented by the British company ‘’Kingfisher’’. When cooperating with foreign publishers we get from competent bodies the affirmation about the authenticity of facts, data and illustrations. The co-authors and Russian editors made use of trustworthy dictionaries and reference-books, as well as Internet sources.

According to the sources mentioned above, among them UN Human Development Repots (1997), during that period Armenians made up 93,3 percent of the population, the majority of ethnic minorities were the Azeris(2,6 percent), the Russians (1,6 percent). Another source  is the Encyclopedic Dictionary published by Russian encyclopedic publishing house. Here is a citation from there: ‘’the autonomous region of Nagorno Karabakh was formed within Azerbaijan in 1923( article ‘’Nagorno Karabakh’’).

Taking into account the events of the past decade some changes were made in the late publications, and the books were published with corrections (2006, 2007), which may be proved by the files attached. We regret to mention that the latest publication was published with the former wrong first page. This unwelcome mistake has been corrected and a newly edited version of the encyclopedia has been prepared. Anyway, we do not agree that the picture illustrated in the encyclopedia implies undesirable picture about Armenia and its people. The authors used pictures reflecting the life of the common people (compare Russia, p. 232-233, Spain, p.196, Portugal, p.201). The illustrations of the publication are preserved according to the ‘’Copyright Law’’ and are not liable to changes.

We appreciate Your attention to our books. We will go on doing our best to publish interesting books with authentic information.

Sincerely Yours,

Executive director Arkadi Vitruk,
