NATO leaders rejected the proposal of Russian President Medvedev to merge Russian ABM system to the west, according to The Wall Street Journal, citing diplomats and representatives of the Alliance.
“Last Saturday, at a meeting behind closed doors with leaders of NATO in Lisbon, Mr Medvedev proposed to join the missile shield created by the 28 members of the alliance, with Russia’s missile defense system” – write Correspondent Stephen Fidler and Gregory L. White. According to participants of the summit, Obama and other leaders politely declined the offer Medvedev, noting that this issue should consider the technical experts. NATO stressed: the idea of Medvedev are much bigger expectations of the alliance – NATO plans to missile defense cooperation and information exchange between the two systems, but not a single system.
“According to diplomats, governments were taken aback – not understood whether the proposal Medvedev initial negotiating position or gesture to disrupt other people’s plans,” – the newspaper said. But NATO leaders have responded diplomatically, since most of them welcome the prospects of cooperation with Russia, the authors write.
“Despite the apparently conciliatory signals on the issue of missile defense, the Kremlin has not abandoned the idea of expanding its military power in the world” – the newspaper, reporting that on Thursday, Medvedev announced plans to build new military bases abroad to support the fleet.
