Queen Elizabeth II arrived yesterday in the UAE capital Abu Dhabi. Thus began her five-day tour of Persian Gulf countries.

Immediately after the Queen and Prince Philip went down off the plane, they visited the mosque of Sheikh Zayd, one of the six largest mosques in the world, able to contain as many as 40,000 believers, reports NEWSru.com.

The mosque is named in honor of Sheikh Zaid ibn Sultan an-Nahayan, the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates. The Queen visited the tomb of Sheikh Zayd, located directly next to the mosque, and then took off his white shoes went into the main prayer hall. The queen was accompanied by British Foreign Secretary William Hague and his wife, who, entering the mosque, wearing abaya, an Arab woman’s dress, designed to be worn in public places. Queen Elizabeth II did not follow its example. She remained in its “gold” brocade coat, decorated with crystals, Swarovski, and a hat-“pill”, on top of which threw a gold scarf that became for her a kind of hijab. Even barefoot and wearing a hat Elizabeth II has not lost its inherent royal majesty, said the British newspaper The Daily Mail. Queen’s visit to Abu Dhabi, the first after a 31-year hiatus, marked a new stage in relations between the UAE and the UK. In 1979, Queen Elizabeth II visited the Abu Dhabi at the invitation of Sheikh Zayd.
