Environmentalists are Suing the Government
SOCIETY, Weekly news | Haykuhi Barseghyan | November 23, 2010 14:08Community organizations that are opposed to exploitation of uranium mines in Armenia are going to ask the court to abolish all government decisions related to the uranium program. This was announced today during a meeting with journalists, NGOs, the president announced EcoLur Inga Zafaryan and legal adviser NGO “Ecological Safety and the development of democracy,” Kapan Arthur Kazarian.
They reported that currently 10 NGOs have joined the initiative, but their future will be much greater.
Kazarian said that the government’s decision N 228, adopted in 2007, on the basis of which is currently being conducted intelligence operations in the village Lernadzor Syunik, was questioned on Aug. 4, 2009: On this day public hearing was held, about which they are and other community organizations, we learned by chance, but 60-70% of the participants were government officials.
“In Syunik already has three mining companies, which cause enormous damage to the environment and people, and authorities are unable to stop it, – said Arthur Kazarian, – the fourth mine in these circumstances, there can be no question. Uranium is not copper and molybdenum.”
According to her, unsubstantiated allegations of non-risk uranium project are political in nature.
Zarafyan also considers it wrong to send a prototype for a nuclear power plant, as it is an interested party, so that an independent peer review can not be considered.
