The house of the great Armenian poet Yeghishe Charents in Kars has been put up for sale. Rumor has it that a rich Istanbul-based Armenian wished to purchase the house last year, but the deal has not so far been effected for unknown reasons.

Talking to NEWS.am, Lilit Hakobvyan, Director of the Charents memorial flat in Yerevan, could not confirm the rumors. “I know for certain that Turks will not purchase the house. However, under Turkish law, only a Turkish citizen can purchase the house,” Hakobyan said.

She also said that the Armenian side has not applied to the Armenian community in this connection. ‘The Armenian community in Turkey is supposed to do it itself,” she said.

Hakobyan reported that in 2005 she had a meeting with the Kars Mayor, who was a Kurd. She proposed turning Charetnts’ house into a cultural center. “We also proposed the construction of a hotel near the house, for Armenian intellectuals from all the parts of the world to stay there. He welcomed the idea. The problem was raised at the Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and discussed at the government level. The process was interrupted on the day Hrant Dink was murdered. That day the ministry was to decide on addressing a letter to Turkey. However, the process was not completed, she said.
