– In a ceremony held today the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Armenia marked the World Food Day by awarding medals to six representatives of the Armenian food and agriculture sector for their considerable contribution to the field.
On behalf of the FAO Representative in Armenia, Ms. Fernanda Guerrieri, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Armenia, Ms. Dafina Gercheva, presented a silver medal to the “Lamax Group” Ltd and bronze medals to “Euroterm” CJSC, “Biokat Plus” Ltd, “Shahumyan Vin” Ltd, “Agroholding” Ltd and “Sos Simonyan” Ltd. Certificates of Appreciation were awarded to students Astghik Tosunyan, Lianna Sargsyan and Narek Khojoyan from various universities in recognition of their significant efforts in gathering signatures for the “1 Billion Hungry Project” campaign.
Ms. Dafina Gercheva, the UN Resident Coordinator, stressed that “the cooperation among international organizations, particularly UN agencies like the FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, and the World Food Programme, plays a key strategic role in directing global efforts to reach Millennium Development Goal 1 – Eradication of extreme poverty and hunger”.
The FAO has been marking the World Food Day annually since 1980-ies, commemorating the date of the founding of FAO in 1945. The key message of this year’s World Food Day is “United against Hunger”, chosen to recognize the efforts made in the fight against world hunger at national, regional and international levels. This year FAO has organized an online petition – the “1 Billion Hungry Project” – to reflect the moral outrage of the situation.
“Responding properly to the hunger problem requires urgent, resolute and concerted action by all relevant actors and at all levels. It calls for the need for all of us to be united,” said FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf during this year’s World Food Day Celebration on 15 October. He said the theme for this year’s World Food Day “United against Hunger” underlines that achieving food security is not the responsibility of one single party; it is the responsibility of all of us.”
The main aims of the World Food Day are the encouragement of the national, bilateral, multilateral and non-governmental cooperation and efforts in increasing food production; strengthening the national and international solidarity in combating hunger, underfeeding and poverty; and drawing attention to the achievements of food and agricultural development.
