Confusion with Textbooks in High School
Education, Weekly news | Haykuhi Barseghyan | October 18, 2010 6:00
Training at 10 and 11 classes of high school this year is over new textbooks prescribed for the streaming of training. Textbooks are not only on the subjects of Natural humanitarian stream and the Russian language, as announced by the contest winners was not there. After six weeks of instruction for new textbooks, when teachers and pupils have caught the essence of the books, the debate about their quality, positive and negative sides increasingly inflamed.
Both have expressed different opinions about the quality of textbooks. Experts believe the main disadvantage is that there are obvious differences between the stream textbooks. In addition, age-related features of students are not taken into account, presentation of the material is too complex.
Director of 112 high school Karamian Sarkis said that the problem of textbooks is typical of the entire school system as a whole, and not just for high school. As an example he points to the textbook “Technology” for Grade 6: “Maybe it contains a very deep knowledge, but the material and the presentation are available for students of the 6-th grade.”
Karamian says that is the problem of assimilation of textbooks and the knowledge that they give. “There is no significant difference between the textbook Mathematics for Humanities flow and natural science and mathematics. If the flow of Natural Science and Mathematics, the subject studied 6-7 hours a week, and the humanitarian – 3 hours, and textbooks for the humanities should be easier, “- says Karamyan.
Unlike significant differences between the textbooks of different streams is found in other subjects, such as the Armenian literature, Armenian history and so on.
Physics teacher Hrayr Sargsyan considers that the textbooks have a high scientific level, and are made by scientists, but they are difficult to perceive students: “Even the few times I read the lesson, compare with the books of my student years to the class is available to explain the topic.”
However, specialists from the National Institute of Education (NIE) report that they did not receive complaints related to quality and presentation of textbooks.
Head of Armenian studies and socio-cultural items Aram Nazarian said that the issue of textbooks for Armenian subjects solved the problem of streaming distinction: the books differ in scope and content.
Nazarian said that the new textbooks are recent historical data, some historical moments are interpreted from other points of view, which is the main reason for dissatisfaction of professionals: “They’re used to, and for many years they have developed certain stereotypes, and new approaches find it difficult to accept. First, they must themselves learn a new approach and interpretation, to learn how to teach students the material, “- said Nazarian, adding that the problem can be solved by retraining.
Head of the Department of Natural objects and Mathematics Research Department Saribek Hakobyan said that, despite the fact that there is still no science textbook for the humanitarian stream, for teaching the special program-guide, which is and should be a teacher.
According to Hakobyan, the book may seem difficult, if not to use notes, reminiscent of the stream delineation and guide the program: “Books were successful and well accepted.”
