UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY CONCERNED WITH FORCIBLE CHANGE OF DEMOGRAPHIC SITUATION IN GEORGIA

UN General Assembly discussed on September 7 “Lingering conflicts in the GUAM space and their impact on international peace, security and development”. The General Assembly passed a resolution on status of IDPs from Abkhazia, Georgia, and Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia.

In its resolution the General Assembly expressed concern with forcible change of the demographic situation as a result of conflicts in Georgia. It recognized the right of IDPs and refugees as well as their descendants to return to their homes on the entire territory of Georgia, including Abkhazia and South Ossetia, regardless of their ethnicity.

The resolution underlines importance of respecting property rights of all IDPs in Georgia. The General Assembly calls for abstaining from purchasing the abandoned property of IDPs in the conflict zones.

The resolution was supported by 50 states. 17 voted against it and 86 abstained from voting.
