Assad’s rocket strike on Lebanon: Syrian president’s attack seen as ‘major escalation’ in conflict

Syria bombed Lebanon yesterday in a ‘significant escalation’ of the two-year conflict.

According to Lebanon’s National New Agency, President Bashar Assad’s air force hit two locations near the eastern town of Arsal.

The US confirmed that Syrian government aircraft had fired rockets into northern Lebanon.

It was thought to be the second time that Syria has fired rockets into Lebanon.

It comes as the leader of the main Syrian rebel force threw his weight behind the formation of an interim government to administer rebel-held areas as heavy fighting broke out in the Syrian capital and several suburbs.

Yesterday, the Obama administration lent its support to British and French plans to arm Syria’s rebels, saying it wouldn’t stand in the way of any country seeking to re-balance the fight against an Assad regime supported by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah.

The UN estimates 70,000 people have been killed during the conflict and millions of Syrians made homeless.
