A building is dwarfed by an enormous wall of black dust in this dramatic picture taken as a sandstorm hit a small town in China.

The billowing cloud of sand swept across a stud farm in Zhangye in Gansu province on Tuesday.

Eyewitnesses described clouds of dust and sand rolling across the Shandan horse ranch pushed by fierce winds.

The loose sand is thought to have been blown in from Inner Mongolia.

Last week a sandstorm engulfed Beijing pushing pollution in the capital to dangerous levels.

Residents of the capital were urged to stay indoors or cover their faces with masks to avoid breathing in the hazardous air.

Thick fog and smog descended on the cities in the northern and eastern provinces and sandstorms turned the air yellow, significantly reducing visibility.
