Trying to wriggle out of it! Passenger caught with 100,000 dried caterpillars at Gatwick airport tells customs officers he planned to EAT them

A man caught with four bags stuffed with more than 100,000 dried catepillars atGatwickAirporttold border cops he planned to eat them all.

The 22-year-old had wrapped a staggering 94 kilos of caterpillars in cellophane and packed them into his bags before travelling theUKfrom Burkino Faso in west Africa.

He was stopped by Border Force officials, who seized his bags and found ‘tens of thousands’ of the insects, which are considered a delicacy in some parts of the world.

A spokesman for the Border Force said the discovery last Saturday was ‘among the largest of its kind’ at the airport.

‘The insects were seized by Border Force because they breach controls on the importation of products of animal origin.

‘Following the detection, which took place on 23 February, the man was warned by officers about the restrictions on bringing dried insects into the country.’

It is believed there were between 100,000 and 150,000 of the insects – which have been destroyed by the Border Force.
