More proportional candidates quit parliament race

Armenia’s Central Election Commission (CEC) has received withdrawal notices from five candidates listed on different parties’ proportional ballots.

Three of them – David Sargsyan, Artem Sargsyan and Armen Baghdasaryan – are members of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA); two represent the Prosperous Armenia party (PAP) and one, a former minister of agriculture, Gerasim Alaverdyan – the Rule of Law party. The fifth candidate quitting the campaign is Telemak Afrikyan of the opposition United Armenians party.

Before the April 1 deadline, the Commission had registered all the nine parties willing to run for election (RPA, the Armenian Communist, and Democratic parties, PAP, Rule of Law, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaksutyun).

At the CEC’s ad hoc meeting which confirmed the proportional lists, the Commission members had objections to the registering Khachatur Sukiasyan of the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC), and two Rule of Law candidates, Aram Harutyunyan and Gevorg Tosunyan. None of the nominees were confirmed as their documents were found not matching the CEC requirements.

As for the single-mandate contenders nominated in the 41 majority constituencies of Armenia, their number has reduced from 180 to 156.
