Pumice blocks used for concrete in Van – report

VAN. – The preliminary version of the report on the effects and damage caused by the recent earthquake in Van province in Turkey alerts about serious violations in construction of local buildings.
Turkish Government report sent to the Turkish Ministry of Urban Development and the Council of State Control states the understated proportions of building materials used for construction of some buildings which are now razed to the ground. It turned out that bearing beams of certain buildings were made of pumice blocks rather than concrete.
Turkish prosecutors already interrogated 45 people responsible for the construction of these buildings.

The 7.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Van on October 23 at 13:41 local time. The epicenter was located at a distance of 38 kilometers northeast of Van.
604 died, more than 4 thousand were injured.
