An art exhibition aimed at motivating young people to be more active and creative participants of the life in their communities, dedicated to the International Day of Democracy, was opened today at the UN House.

The bright paintings of the Armenian painter Karen Tantushyan were exhibited. His artworks have attracted the attention of the UN staff, the international community, civil society, the media and the general public.

The exhibition is aimed at complimenting the country’s efforts to raise public awareness on democratic governance; and that democracy provides the foundations for durable peace, security and development.

Maria Dotsenko, UN Department of Public Information Representative said: “Democracy is one of the universal and indivisible core values and principles of the United Nations. Through the art, the UN Office in Armenia wishes to once again attract attention to the joint efforts of authorities and civil society aimed to strengthen the fundamental freedoms that are the bases for any democratic society. Together with our partners we continue to motivate young people to contribute to the development of democracy in their beautiful country.”

The event is organized by the UN Department of Public Information in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Women’s Leadership Forum.

The International Day of Democracy is being marked worldwide on September 15 since 2007, by the decision of the United Nations General Assembly. This decision encourages Governments to strengthen national programmes devoted to the promotion and consolidation of democracy.

The exhibition will be open for public until September 23, from 15:00-17:00.
