The current dialogue between the authorities and the opposition Armenian National Congress is aimed at undermining the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D), says a top ARF-D parliamentarian.

Speaking at a briefing in parliament on Monday, Vahan Hovhannisyan, the leader of the ARF-D faction in parliament, characterized the collaboration between the authorities and the opposition alliance a “hysterical and unfounded” attack against his party. He said the dialogue marks the start to an ideological struggle in Armenia.

“The ANC leader makes exaggerated statements on the ARF-D’s concerns over the dialogue,” he said, referring to ANC leader and Armenia’s president Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s current policies.

He said the party realizes Ter-Petrosyan, given the decreasing number of people attending his rallies. On the other hand, he added, the ANC leader attempts seek to underline the importance of the dialogue, focusing more attention in the ARF-D. Hovhannisyan finds its goal is to find a new target for the opposition alliance.

“What does Levon ter-Petrosyan say? Actually, the same thing he used to say in the past. He says Armenia cannot stand this anymore, and there’ll be no better life unless the country returns Karabakh,” he added.

Hovhannisyan noted that the authorities are more concerned over maintaining power and less inclined to promote a progress in the Nagorno Karabakh conflict settlement. “It’s the lack of ideological basis that has made the authorities hesitant,” he said.
