European farmers suffer losses due to outbreak of E. coli
Economics, Daily news | ankakh | June 6, 2011 13:24YEREVAN. – The European farmers suffer million euro losses, many households are on the edge of bankruptcy due to outbreak of deadly E. coli bacteria transmitted to humans through vegetables.
The recent disclosure by German doctors that outbreak was caused by bean sprouts somehow eased tension but the panic has not yet disappeared.
Weekly turnover of vegetables in the EU reaches 1 billion euros, while losses of the European farmers are estimated at 300 million euros.
Almost all Europeans stopped buying vegetables, while the German government advised that people should temporarily avoid buying cucumbers and tomatoes.
Russia not only prohibited import of vegetables from Europe, but has removed from sale already imported potatoes, cabbage and other vegetables. For instance, sale of French potatoes is banned.
It should be noted that the Russian ban on imports does not affect the South Caucasus, therefore some companies plan to replace European vegetables by Armenian ones in the Russian market.
