Armenian businessmen critical of IMF official
Economics, Daily news | ankakh | April 23, 2011 18:46Armenia’s Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) and Union of Information Technology Enterprises (UITE) addressed an open letter to Head of the IMF mission in Armenia Guillermo Tolosa, in connection with his statement on tax benefits to high-tech companies.
In their letter the authors express their concern over and disagreement with Mr. Tolosa’s idea, voiced at a press conference on April 15, that the IMF does not welcome Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s proposal to grant profit tax benefits to innovation companies. According to Mr. Tolosa, the IMF is against tax holidays. Moreover, tax benefits will pose tax collection risks.
The authors consider Mr. Tolosa’s opinion “ungrounded” and express their full support to President Serzh Sargsyan. According to them, sharing Mr. Tolosa’s opinion means hindering Armenia’s economic progress. Such a critical attitude to the improvement of taxation will inevitably cause a decline in production and innovation business, says the letter.
It is the innovation sector that will facilitate Armenia’s economic recovery and additional tax revenues, which will ease social tension and modernize economy.
The letter was signed by CCI Chairman Martin Safgsyan, Chairman of the Union of Manufacturers and Businessmen (UMBA) Arsen Ghazaryan, UITE Chairman Hovhannes Avoyan and UITE Director Karen Vardanyan.
