Heritage rep: early elections in Armenia to make ANC void of content
Politics, Daily news | ankakh | April 11, 2011 15:37The Armenian authorities and the Armenian National Congress (ANC) reached an agreement on early elections, Ruben Hakobyan, Vice-Chairman of the Heritage, told journalists April 11. Both the ANC and the authorities would benefit from early elections now, as the ANC still enjoys some public supports. Since the March 17 rally, when the ANC announced cooperation with the authorities, has gradually been losing this support, Hakobyan said. “Should early elections be held, the ANC will prove void of any content,” he said.
International agencies are supportive of the idea of early elections as well. Specifically, PACE Rapporteur on Armenia John Prescott, who was in Yerevan on March 17, conveyed the proposal to the Armenian authorities. Under international pressure, the authorities agreed to a dialogue with the ANC.
As regards the ruling forces, particularly the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), Hakobyan said that it would benefit from early elections as well. By signing the coalition memorandum, the party ensured a majority in the future Parliament for itself.
Armenian News- NEWS.am reminds readers that three political forces – the Republican Party of Armenia, Prosperous Armenia Party and Rule of Law party – signed a coalition memorandum. Under the memorandum, the coalition parties are not to “put on political weight” at each other`s expense or due to realignment within the coalition. In the next presidential election, the coalition will nominate a common presidential candidate, the incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan.
