UN Family in Armenia pays tribute to colleagues who fell in line of duty in hotspots around the world
Worldwide, Daily news | ankakh | April 6, 2011 21:10The UN Office in Armenia together with the United Nations offices around the world are flying the UN flag at half mast today (Wednesday, April 6, 2011), as a symbol of support for the bereaved in this time of sorrow.
The UN staff in New York will also be attending a wreath-laying ceremony in the Chagall Window area.
BAN Ki-moon, the Secretary-General of the UN said: “As we in the UN family mourn our heavy losses, we also remain committed to our missions. Our fallen colleagues would want us to carry forward the work they performed so valiantly. Our fallen colleagues were working in the best tradition of the United Nations, far from home in dangerous places. They gave their lives in the service of humanity; their dedication will continue to inspire us.”
The current information is incomplete, but at the moment the following can be confirmed:
On 30 March, Captain Sultan Al Shraah (Jordan) was killed on patrol in Port-au-Prince. He was a member of UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).
The next day, Ms. Zahra Abidi (Sweden) died after being hit by a stray bullet in Abidjan. She was an information analyst with UNOCI in Cote d’Ivoire.
Last Friday, April 1, seven members of the UN mission in Afghanistan were killed during an attack on the UN compound in Mazar-e-Sharif. Their names:

Lieutenant Colonel Siri Skare (Norway)

On 4 March a UN aircraft crashed on landing in Kinshasa. The flight originated in Kisangani and was transporting both UN and non-UN passengers. Of the 29 passengers and four crew members, all but one perished; the sole survivor is in the hospital with critical injuries.
